Most popular types of visas to Austria

  • Schengen visa C (short-stay, up to 90 days in any 180-day period): tourism, business trips, visiting family/friends, short courses, etc. Valid across the Schengen Area.
  • National visa D (from 91 days up to 6 months): longer study/work, preparatory stay before obtaining a residence permit. Also allows short Schengen travel up to 90/180. For stays over 6 months, you’ll need a residence permit(Aufenthaltstitel).

2) Do you need a visa for a short trip at all?

  • Ukrainian citizens with a biometric passport may travel visa-free for up to 90/180 (not for employment).
  • Non-ukrainian citizens mostly need visas.

3) Where to apply and how to book an appointment

  • Apply at the consulate of the country that is your main destination (or the first country of entry if days are split evenly). Applications are usually accepted via visa centers.

4) Basic document set (for C)

  • Passport (valid for at least 3+ months beyond the planned Schengen exit).
  • Application form, photo (ICAO compliant).
  • Travel medical insurance covering the entire trip, valid throughout Schengen, minimum €30,000 (medical care/hospitalization/repatriation).
  • Proofs of travel purpose, accommodation, itinerary/tickets, sufficient financial means, and intention to return.
  • Biometrics (fingerprints + photo) at submission; if provided previously, they are usually valid for up to 5 years.

If your trip is sponsored by a host in Austria, they may be asked to file an electronic Verpflichtungserklärung (EVE) — an electronic declaration of financial responsibility with the police/municipal authority.

5) Processing times and fees

  • Processing time for a C-visa: typically up to 15 days, up to 45 days if additional checks are needed. Apply no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before the trip.
  • Consular fee (C): €35-90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6–11; plus the visa center service fee (if applying through one).\

6) Important about visa D and residence permits

  • Visa D is issued for a specific purpose (study/work/family reunification, etc.), usually for 91–180 days; for longer stays you apply for an Austrian residence permit (e.g., Red-White-Red Card, student, researcher, family, etc.).

7) New EU border IT systems (for your awareness)

  • EES (Entry/Exit System) — biometric recording of entries/exits is planned to start 12 October 2025.
  • ETIAS — pre-travel authorization for visa-free travelers is expected from late 2026 (for trips after launch). This does not affect visa applications (C/D).

Consular fees are paid extra. Usually consular fee is around 35 Euro+
